High Speed Fibre Optic Broadband

We've finally got it!  The high speed broadband new cabinet (at Webberton Cross) is live.

What's Changed?
If you're presently on good old ISDN broadband, then you're on copper cable all the way from Kennford exchange.  And quite slow.  The new system is a fibre optic cable from Kennford  to the new green cabinet at Webberton Cross so you now have the option to link, via your copper cable, from your house to this cabinet.

Most of us are about 0.8 to 1.8MB but one person, recently connected to fibre, is now running at 28MB!  Measure your present broadband speed!

How Fast?
You might be on about 0.8 to 2 MB per second speed at present.  The high speed option will allow between 25 and 40MBps, depending on how far you are from the new cabinet at Webberton Cross.

So how do you get it?
You have to pay a bit more per month for this high speed performance.  You will also need a new modem and a BT router; you might have a connection fee or upgrade charge; there might be a fee for a technician to install things for you.  You might find it all at a little under £20 per month.

You still have to pay line rental (about £15 per month, or about £10.5 if you pay a year upfront)

What to Do Next
Contact your ISP (BT, PlusNet, TalkTalk, Orange, etc) and see what deal they can offer for high speed fibre broadband.  You'll need to decide about whether to include the phone, how much download you need (could be 40GB or unlimited) and take account of any Contract (cancellation fees?) you're presently in with your ISP.

Let's hear how you get on so we can share knowledge.  Feedback to Dudley

Feedback
Some of the deals that have come to light are:
  • TalkTalk upgrade - £18 pm; 18 month contract; all time free phone; unlimited downloads.  Quite a deal!
  • Plusnet upgrade - £21 pm; 2 year contract; all time free phone; 40GB/month
  • My (Dudley) own results (average of four test sites) are Download 28.64Mbps & Upload 7.4Mbps.  Pretty spectacular compared with the 1.5 and 0.4 I had on ADSL.
