Role of the Parish Council
Parish Council’s were formed in 1894 when the civil parish was chosen for local government in rural areas. These are the oldest type of local authority. They are an elected corporate body in the first tier of local government and a separate legal entity and are also known as local councils.
The councils have powers including the raising of money through taxation (the precept) and a range of powers to spend public money. Although there is no limit to the amount that can be raised, the money can only be used for a limited number of purposes. They are able to exercise a range of specific statutory discretionary powers and they can choose what they do.
Dunchideock Parish Council has seven unpaid councillors who are elected to serve for four years. A casual vacancy may be filled by a by-election or co-option. The Council represents the interests of the local community, delivers services to meet local needs, and can influence decisions to improve the quality of life and well being of the community.
The making of local decisions and policy relevant to the public interest is done at meetings of the Council which are held in the Village Hall on the 2nd Tuesday of alternate months from January. The agenda will be on the notice boards and website and residents are welcome to attend. An Annual Council Meeting and a separate Annual Parish Meeting are held in May.
The Council is administered by the Parish Clerk, who is also the Responsible Financial Officer and Proper Officer of the Council. The Clerk is the formal point of contact for the Council and is the source of information for the public about the Council’s activities.
